Representation on magazine front covers

In the men's magazine the photo has been edited to show off the definition of his muscles. This is done by publishing the image in black and white. With the darkest shade you can see the contrast of how far his muscle is popping out. The lighter shades give the male a shine to him. The image is of a well known celebrity, who boxes for a living. This represents that all male should look like this, being really defined and toned. This is always repeated on this magazine. His body language is so he's side on towards the camera, with his facial expression looking stern and powerful with all his muscle, this is repeated because men aren't allowed to show emotion because they have to be dominant. "the bigger man". This magazine is aimed at men keeping in shape, "best body ever". It gives you tips and tricks that you'll only find in this magazine according to this front cover. The only colour on this front cover is the mast head of the magazine but also the really important information about helping out young people. The rest is all black and white. The language used works with the image, "the best body ever" reflects the image of Anthony Joshua with his best body.

On the women's magazine you once again have somebody famous on the front cover to you can be just like them, and know all about them. This front cover represents pink being associated with women, and that they should be focused on there appearance. Pink has been the colour for women for many years making it very traditional. The whole background, masthead, writing and even the models clothes are pink. This magazine is about women's health and how they can become more healthier by working out, but the model is wearing a woolly top, with big earrings and full face of makeup, nobody would wear this workout. She is wearing a full face of makeup, that's pink, with her hair done, blowing in the wind. This is repeated in all women's magazine.

Stereotypes

Age: This represents that old people love to bake, especially grandma's. It's very traditional idea.

Gender: Women are represented as being at home cooking for the family, and potentially looking after the children while she waits for her husband to come home from work, who's providing for the family. This is a very traditional idea.

Ethnicity: This represent that people who look different are excluded from being apart of everyday life, because of who they look. This is very traditional idea.

Status and Class: This represents that the lower class are improper compared to someone of a higher class. They dress as though they aren't bothered.

Research: codes and convention of magazine front covers

The brand identity for both of the magazine are from the same institution Q!. The logo letter Q is always in a red box. The colour red has the representation of being important, stop and danger. Red is a powerful colour as its a primary colour making it strong. The theme for the magazine is always red, white and black. This fits into the fact that the main celebrity on the front cover is from a rock band (Dave Grohl), giving it stereotype that come with being in a rock band. They are considered to be in dark clothing and makeup. There are bold cover lines on this front cover entices the reader as they are mentioning more well known celebrities so that it will appeal to more people. This is because the Foo Fighters are a soft rock band, but there is a mention of Niki Minaj, who is considered to be more of the pop side of music. There are conventions on this front, like the advertising in the top right hand corner. The words "free" and "exclusive" are buzzwords making people even more eager to buy the magazine. these are placed in a puff, a circular shape that the words are placed in. The main image on this front cover is of the lead singer of the Foo Fighters, a well known celebrity. This image has been edited to show that he has power and authority, being dominant. His facial expression is very aggressive. This links into Judith Butlers idea that gender is a performance, but also Stuart Hall. Stuart Hall theory is that representation is the way in which meanings are produced through the signs and convention. Like stereotyping on the front cover of this Q! magazine, with both of the celebrities. The Foo Fighter cover shows how the male is very confident and dominant, how a male should be as we've grown up to have these ideas of what every male is like. The same goes for the Cheryl Cole poster. She as a women is brought up to be something that a male desires and should be seductive because that's what we've been taught. Men as stereotypically aggressive and modern woman as using sexuality as a power tool. Both negative interpretations, but some readers may read these texts this way. Hall negotiated theory can be applied as well, as the audience accepts parts of the producer's views, but has their own views on parts as well.

Media Forms

 Media Forms

What is media forms?

Media Forms is the way that media is created, produced, distributed, consumed and read.

Different types of media

Print Media

Print media is very traditional and what the older generation grew up with. Examples include: newspaper, magazines, books, comic books or graphic novels. But most of these are going out of business due to the development of new technology. Traditional books are now becoming e-books which are all electronic like the Amazon Kindle and the news are now accessible through the internet.

Television

To begin with there were very little channels to choose from, on the television with most of them being in black and white. now there are hundreds and thousands of channels, series and movies to choose from, from the comfort of your own home. You no longer have to watch it when it's broadcasted you can now record it and watch it later whenever you want. Not only that but you can download and stream episodes from the internet.

Movies

Movies are the oldest form of motion pictures. Originally, you could only see a movie in your local movie theatre. But movies now are widely available due to the technology evolving. it started with DVD's being invented so that you could watch the film in your own home without going out, but now we have it all built into the televisions with companies developing apps that can carry and streams thousands of films. there are now major companies that have made millions in this industry like Disney.
